4 Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
When Is A Root Canal Necessary?
Despite the fear-inducing reputation, root canal treatment preserves the dead or infected tooth.
Root canal therapy is recommended when there is a need to repair and preserve a severely damaged or infected tooth.
Here at Wayne Dental Arts, we perform non-surgical root canals when there is a need to remove an infection from the nerve or tooth pulp – the collection of tissue & blood vessels inside the tooth structure.
Infection of the tooth pulp can be caused by trauma, tooth decay, cracked or chipped teeth, or repeated dental procedures.
In order for the infection to be removed, root canal treatment is necessary.
The alternative is tooth extraction and to replace your natural tooth with a dental implant, which is a healthier solution than a denture or dental bridge.
The infection is first cleaned & disinfected, then filled and sealed – most often with a dental crown – to prevent further damage and restore your ability to bite & chew normally.
The symptoms most often associated with root canal treatment include:
- Tooth pain
- Pain in your gums and/or jaw
- Swelling
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Abscess
What Should You Expect During a Root Canal?
After speaking with Dr. Maldonado and determining that non-surgical root canal is the recommended treatment, here are the basic steps involved.
Step 1: X-Ray
Dr. Maldonado will take x-rays or examine your existing x-rays to illustrate exactly where the infection is that needs to be removed.
Step 2: Anesthesia
Does the term root canal make you cringe?
It shouldn’t, root canals are not painful and the most common comparison we hear from patients is that it felt like getting a filling.
To limit any discomfort a local anesthetic will be administered to the infected tooth.
Step 3: Pulpectomy
A “canal” is drilled into the tooth to remove the infected and diseased tooth pulp.
Step 4: Filling
The canal will then be filled with a material called gutta-percha and sealed off with tooth cement. Dr. Maldonado will determine whether you need a dental crown after removing the infection and sealing off your tooth.
4 Benefits of Root Canal Treatment
- Your pain will go away.
- The infection in your tooth – which could spread throughout your body – will be removed.
- The formation of an abscess will be halted.
- Biting & chewing become more efficient.
