When Is National Flossing Day?
National Flossing Day
“I wrote a song about dental floss but did anyone’s teeth get cleaner?” – Frank Zappa
Dental floss really gets a bad wrap.
Despite it being part of our recommended daily dental hygiene regimen, and as a result, one of the best things we can do to prevent the cavity creeps, do we really give dental floss the respect it deserves?
It seems like trendy activated charcoal teeth whitening products, DIY teeth-straightening, and $300 electric toothbrushes that play music and time your brushing efforts are all the rage.
And the dental floss is sitting in your medicine cabinet pulling a Rodney Dangerfield. Read the rest of this entry »

9 Health Problems Your Dentist Can Spot
Check out these overall health issues your dentist can help identify just by looking in your mouth…and at your gums.
What Do Your Gums Say About You?
A healthy body starts with your mouth. A healthy mouth starts with healthy gums.
“They are like the foundation of a house: If you have any damage at the base, it starts to impact the entire structure,” says Richard Kao, DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology in Cupertino, California.
If left untreated, gum disease can lead to not only oral health problems like gum recession, tooth decay, tooth loss, and eventually bone loss, it can also lead to serious issues with your overall health too.
Many studies have identified correlations between poor dental and gum health to other health conditions like heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, prenatal complications, even certain types of cancer. And more. Read the rest of this entry »

Celebrate A Healthy Smile on National Brush Day
National Brush Day 2019
It’s no coincidence that National Brush Day is observed annually on November 1st, the day after Halloween, which traditionally is the single most significant day of candy consumption in the United States.
National Brush Day is part of the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign, a national initiative launched by The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives and the Ad Council in 2012.
It aims to help parents and caregivers understand why poor dental health can have serious consequences, and about simple ways in which they can help improve their children’s oral health and prevent dental disease.
The campaign aims to motivate parents to take action to reduce their children’s risk of oral disease by making sure their kids are brushing their teeth for two minutes, twice a day. Read the rest of this entry »

Dental Implant FAQs: 7 Answers to Questions People Ask Most
Dental Implant FAQs
Dental implants are widely considered the healthiest solution to replace one or more missing teeth.
When you’re missing a tooth – even just one – the remaining teeth adjacent to the space left by the missing tooth will begin to move into that empty space.
That’s not healthy. The healthiest way to replace that missing tooth is with a dental implant.
This is because dental implants are surgically anchored into your jaw.
Implants mimic the natural tooth root, thereby preventing the adjacent teeth from moving, and any of the associated complications, especially jaw bone loss.
Dental implants are the next best thing to your natural teeth.
Here is a list of the seven most common questions people ask about dental implants… Read the rest of this entry »

6 Reasons to Smile About Dental Implants
Dental Implant Awareness Month: What’s Your Reason to Smile?
This year’s theme of Dental Implant Awareness Month is, “What’s your reason to smile?”
The mission of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry aims to empower individuals considering dental implants through education and celebrate those who are already living a life full of smiles with their dental implants.
Dental implants are the most comfortable and permanent solution to replacing one or more missing teeth.
This is because dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that actually mimics your natural teeth.
A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown, if you were to compare natural human teeth to implant-supported replacement teeth, you’d see they are basically the same. Read the rest of this entry »

Are School Band Instruments Bacterial Hot Zones?
The Band Is Back To School
During back to school season, parents have a lot to worry about, plan for, deal with, and do.
If you have a child who plays in the school band, remember to add some anti-bacterial products to that back-to-school shopping list.
In a study from the journal General Dentistry, published by the Academy of General Dentistry, researchers found 295 different types of bacteria in the 117 spots that were tested, which included the mouthpieces, internal chambers, and instrument cases of school band instruments.
Several different types of infection-causing staphylococcus bacteria were identified in many of the instruments.
Other bacteria — including those associated with diarrhea, food poisoning, osteomyelitis, or bone infection, and other conditions — were also discovered. Read the rest of this entry »
